Steven Gambrel: Perspective

Top interior designer Steven Gambrel's luxe aspirational cloth-bound tome showcases his latest home interiors. Using a classical approach injected with contemporary touches and vibrant color, he creates spaces for today rooted in the past.

A connoisseur of historical styles, Gambrel's designs feature compelling reinterpretations of the past coupled with a sense of place. Rooms range in style from elegant country to high-gloss urban. A confident colorist, his daring palette includes bright pinks, emerald-greens, deep grays, and cerulean blues. His tactile surfaces--from shiny lacquer to rugged matte--provide an exciting textural contrast to the elegant antiques and vintage furnishings mixed seamlessly with his upholstered creations.

For his second book, the designer gives insight into his unique sensibility with recent projects including his nineteenth-century townhouse in New York City's West Village; a lime-washed brick Bridgehampton beach house; a rustic, refined Zurich estate; the luxurious Astor Suite in Manhattan's Plaza Hotel; and a charming sea captain's house in Sag Harbor. These residences will inspire design aficionados.

Reviews

"As a designer, I reference Steven Gambrel: Perspective all the time. His use of color is such an inspiration to me." —Whitney Ray of Wyeth Ray Interiors, Veranda

"Virginia native and New York City-based interior designer Steven Gambrel debuts his second book this season, filled to the brim with examples of his inimitable use of color and inspiring love of design and architectural history in all its forms." —Garden & Gun

"It would be hard to name a more influential, or imitated, Amerian designer working today than Steven Gambrel. His work manages to be both soigné and charming, colorful and understated. In his new book, Perspective... he provides an in-depth look at a dozen recent projects, seperated into two categories, Town and Country, because he feels context is crucial in establishing a proper style for each project. Standouts include a full-floor apartment in Chicago's Palmolive Building, overlooking Lake Michigan, that is a soigné composition in grays and blues with vivid shots of red, and an East Hampton guesthouse that mixes a grand, double-height living room with more intimate spaces outfitted in watery hues and humble beadboard." —Dering Hall
